Kenton On Sea at a glance

The village of Kenton on Sea started life as a coastal resort― a camping spot for the descendants of

1820 settlers who came down by wagon from farms and villages as far afield as Bedford to spend

their Christmas holidays on the beach. Strandloper middens near the Bushmans River Mouth are

evidence of the fact that the San once camped there too. Today, apart from the village that was

developed as a residential area in the 1940s, the coast remains as unspoiled and “undeveloped” as it

was then. Infrastructure is minimal and merely there to maintain Blue Flag status for Kenton’s two

main beaches. A walk along the pristine shore at the end of a hot day to catch the breeze and

restore the soul is the same as it was for the Strandlopers, the Settlers, the residents and

holidaymakers today.

Nestled between the Bushman’s and the Kariega river mouths, and bounded by the Joan Muirhead

nature conservancy on its southern coastal boundary, Kenton’s spread has been contained. Plot

clearance is regulated by the Department of Forestry which strives to save as many protected

‘melkbos’ trees from each builder’s chainsaw as possible. All of this gives Kenton its unique

ecological charm as a resort along the Eastern Cape’s Sunshine Coast. In the stillness of the night one

often hears the call of a night jar, the hooting of a Cape Eagle owl, and the gentle ‘chirping’ of a

chorus tree frogs. It’s a charm that is fiercely protected by Kenton’s 900 property owners and their

highly committed ratepayers association, Rotary club, Business Forum and Round Table. To this day

these organisations run projects to keep the town clean and orderly and to save the tiny, vulnerable

blue duiker and a few other remaining species that still inhabit the forests.

While many of the properties are holiday homes, the rest are owned by retirees and young families

who have chosen a more relaxed and laidback lifestyle. There is a creative crèche, Bushken, for pre-

schoolers as well as a well-run and educationally-innovative Primary School, which arranges a variety

of sporting and other extra-mural activities including a very popular soapbox derby in its playing

fields every year. At secondary level, families can send their children to Port Alfred’s highly-regarded

secondary school some 26 kms away. Alternatively, there are a number of distinguished private

schools in Grahamstown some 60 kms inland. While Kenton has a medical centre with a resident

medical doctor, a dentist and a pharmacy, there are NetCare private-public partnership hospitals in

both Port Alfred and Grahamstown.

For holidaymakers and residents alike, Kenton offers a variety of outdoor and holiday activities such

as boating, fishing, windsurfing, horse riding, hiking, birding and swimming at Blue Flag beaches,

with a safe and sheltered lagoon for littlies at the Kariega river mouth. There are a variety of active

sporting clubs: angling, tennis and bowls. The churches are well represented. Within easy motoring

distance there is the Royal Port Alfred Golf Club with its magnificent views of the Sunshine Coast, the

Fish River Country Club and Woody Cape section of Addo Elephant Park. On the town’s doorstep

there are game farms and private game reserves which offer cruises up the river, followed by lunch

and a game drive. There is a marina and a floating restaurant on the Bushmans River. In town there

are coffee shops, restaurants and a pub. Last but not least there is “Homewoods” where you can sit

on the deck on a Sunday morning and eat a leisurely breakfast as you watch the ebb and flow of the

tide as it washes in and out of the lagoon at Kariega river mouth. In the words of the Eastern Cape’s

poet Chris Mann: “Calm rinses steadily through you. What follows could be grace. And then you’re

ready, to turn and go back into the hurly-burly.” (From his poem, “Heartlands”).

For those who need culture and a night life, Grahamstown is within striking distance. Once a year

you can enjoy the “once-in-lifetime” experience of “ten days of amazing” , the internationally

renowned National Festival of Arts held there over ten days at the end of June each year. And both

Port Alfred and Grahamstown have a variety of amenities, bookshops, shopping malls and theatres.

In both these towns there are clubs and communities that arrange talks, music concerts, art

exhibitions and other cultural events all year round. The science departments, scientific institutions

and environmental organisations surrounding Rhodes University provide a constant stream of public

lectures, talks and outings for those who want to further their interest in many things scientific.

Houses in Kenton range greatly in size, style and cost. Houses at the top end of the market generally

have river frontage with stunning views of the river mouths and the sea. A limited few are clustered

along a ridge on the town’s south western corner with views of the sea. Throughout the village there

are a range of cottages and bungalows, ideal for the average family or holiday-home owner. SEEFF

property Kenton on Sea boasts a wide selection of all these properties for sale ranging from

impressive villas and mansions, set on spacious plots with magnificent views of the sea and river

estuaries, to cottages and homes tucked away in various places throughout the village. SEEFF also

offers vacant plots for development: some exclusive, while others are located in secure, gated

developments within the village or across the two rivers in eco-lifestyle developments. SEEFF also

has a range of holiday-homes and properties to let.

Olifantpark, of Grahamstad skole.

Gevolglik is uitbreiding in Kenton beperk.

aktiwiteite aanbied insluitende 'n baie populêre jaarlikse kaskarreisies. Op sekondêre vlak kan

kinders die Port Alfred Hoërskool bywoon sowat 26km ver. Dit staan bekend as 'n goeie skool

waar kinders tot matriek kan skoolgaan. Alternatiewelik is daar 'n aantal bekende privaatskole in

rolbalklubs.

you. What follows could be grace. And then you’re ready, to turn and go back into the hurlyburly.”
