A brief history of the area
The settlement of Stellenbosch dates back to 1682 and its restored Cape Dutch architecture is one of the features that makes Stellenbosch so Instagrammable. The town is named in honour of Simon van der Stel, the new governor that arrived in the Cape in 1679. In 1690, grapes were planted in the area by several French Huguenots, and Stellenbosch's legacy as a winemaking region began.
Distance from key points (Airport/CBD)
If you're travelling from Stellenbosch to Cape Town International Airport, you'll be taking a 29 km trip that will take around 35 minutes in average traffic. If you're heading into Cape Town's CBD, expect the trip to take about 50 minutes in normal traffic. You'll be covering a distance of around 55 km.
Climate
As a neighbour of Cape Town, Stellenbosch's weather patterns include warm, dry summers and wet winters that will have residents reaching for a jersey or jacket. Summer days typically reach into the high 20s or low 30s, with the mercury dropping into the teens at night. During winter, an average day's maximum temperature will reach the high teens, and temperatures well below 10°C at night.
Schools in the area
It is not only its university that has given Stellenbosch the reputation of being an education hub of South Africa. There is an array of great primary and high schools in the area. The list of primary schools in Stellenbosch includes Laerskool Stellenbosch, Laerskool Eikestad and Rhenish Primary School. For high school, learners can attend Hoërskool Stellenbosch, Rhenish Girls' High School or Paul Roos Gimnasium.
Healthcare in the area
In an emergency, residents of Stellenbosch can head to Mediclinic Stellenbosch. In addition, Mediclinic Stellenbosch Day Clinic offers a variety of services and scans, from CT scans and MRIs to pathology and radiology. Various medical practitioners, including general practitioners, dentists, physiotherapists and optometrists can be found in Stellenbosch.

It would take weeks of dining out every night to fully explore the smorgasbord of culinary delights that Stellenbosch has to offer. The list of perennial favourites includes Rykaarts with its speciality menu and Rust en Vrede Wine Estate's restaurant, which has been delighting palates since 2007. For a lovely hearty lunch, look no further than The Kraal at Joostenburg wine estate, where you can enjoy a lunch of local flavours served outside under the fruit trees.

The list of top attractions in Stellenbosch includes a long list of world-renowned wine estates, including Rust en Vrede, Ernie Els Wines and Waterford Wine Estate, amongst many others. The Vine Hopper provides a great way to explore the area's wineries safely and responsibly.
Stellenbosch University is an attraction in its own right. This renowned academic institution is recognised as one of the country's top four research universities.
Other great things to do if you've got a free day in Stellenbosch include going for a hike in Jonkershoek Nature Reserve or visiting Eagle Encounters at Spier, where you can enjoy unforgettable interactive flying shows.
