According to Gijsbertus Hoogendoorn's, research paper: Critical perspectives on the (re)development of Westdene, Bloemfontein, during the South African War (1899-1902), the town council of Bloemfontein contemplated plans to develop new neighbourhoods, as residential accommodation was in short supply.So, in October 1901, the council decided to develop what was then known as the "Western Extensions", later to be known as Westdene.
