Riviersonderend offers the tranquillity of beautiful mountain and river scenery. It is well known for it’s warm and friendly rural atmosphere and outstanding good hospitality and very low crime rate.
Riviersonderend is situated halfway between Cape Town and Mosselbay on the N2. It has a Mediterranean climate. This give rise to the huge flocks of Blue Crane, our national bird, one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Overberg.
Driving form Caledon to Riviersonderend and onwards to Swellendam you will experience the rolling green hills in the winter with a touch of eye catching bright yellow canola in-between. In the summer the different shades of brown stubblefiels with a touch of green from the established pastures will enfold you like a patchwork quilt. The magnificent Riviersonderend River, that flows form Theewaterskloof dam to the Breede River on the other side of Stormsvlei and the numerous mountain streams, provide enough water for the citrus and vegetables farms. You will hear the gentle sounds of cows, sheep and many bird’s songs. The smell of fynbos, roses and freshly plowed fields will welcome you.
Riviersonderend as proper town was established in 1922, when Ms Edith McIntyre sold her farm Tierhoek to the church council. At first they wanted to name Riviersonderend ‘Nuwedorp’(New Town), but the older residence wanted Rivier Zonder End from the Hesseque word: Kamma-kam-kanna (water, never ending water).
Being established in 1922 Riviersonderend has many unique properties. The most popular architectures are Cape Dutch and Victorian. The combination of the beautiful architectures and big stands makes these country properties very sought after in Southern Africa and the Overberg.
