Alexandria 2021
Alexandria is a smallish (about 10 000 residents) town on the R72, between Port Elizabeth and Port Alfred. It is steeped in history. Originally it was established to service the local farming community and missionaries who came from Europe to convert local inhabitants. Over the years there has been a move from farming to tourism and the promotion of the "Game" industry. There are a number of game reserves in the vicinity and farms that promote hunting.
Alexandria has a supermarket, garages, farming co-operatives and a host of service industries supporting the local and farming communities.
People with a creative bent seem to enjoy the quiet environment, character homes and big gardens. The village boasts renowned artists and writers.
Dias Retirement Village which offers residents the opportunity to move to a more secure environment when the time suits them, also has a caring frail care facility.
Things to do
- Many people moving to Alexandria start small businesses such as catering, carpentry, metalwork and other trades serving the community. .Alexandria has its own golf course, managed and maintained by the local community. The net result, golf is very affordable and the clubhouse activity, sociable. There are other great courses in Port Alfred, at the Fish River and Grahamstown.
- Maureen Quin has built an international reputation as a scuptress. She is best known for her wildlife and abstract works, but has also done a number of portrait busts of famous people, including Nelson Mandela. A visit to her garden is very worthwhile.
- Being just 15 kms from the coast and the Alexandria dune fields. They are noteworthy for their size(one of the biggest in the southern hemisphere) and they are pristine. There are a number of walking trails (one and two day) that incorporate the dunes and the Alexandria forest. A great way to rejuvenate the soul.
- The coast is within 15 kms. Boknesstrand and Cannon Rocks have great beaches and boating fishing facilities.Cannon Rocks is renowned for KiteSurfing.
- We have a number of game reserves, Kariega and Sibuya, close at hand. Day trips are very popular.
- This area has a vibrant local history. Experts are available to give you tours of the area and explain its history.
- The chicory plant in Alexandria is the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere. Chicory offers local farmers a great cash crop to supplement the dairy and pineapple industries.

Alexandria predominantly services the farming community. There are farms available of all sorts, from small lifestyle farms to large commercial farms. Farming activities focus mainly on livestock, chicory and pineapples.
