De Aar at a glance

De Aar, a beautiful town in the heart of the Karoo, with a population of 40 000 residents, is the biggest town in this region. The name "De Aar" means vein and it is relevant to the town as it has a solid "vein" of underground of water supply.

De Aar is also the second biggest Railway junction in South Africa and has one of the biggest Ammunition Depots in the world. The town has a few Restaurants, Food and Furniture stores, Banks, Accommodation Facilities, Good Medical Facilities, an Old Age home, as well as many other day to day businesses.

The Schools offer a high standard of education reigning grade R up to Grade 12, as well as I Technikon.

Some places of interest here includes: The House of Olive Schreiner (a famous author and feminist who wrote Women and labor), which now serves as a Restaurant.

A Local weather station which sends off a weather balloon regularly and welcomes visitors.

The Region also holds many World, as well as local Paragliding records and for the adrenaline junkies there is a local paragliding school which offers courses and tandem flights.

Brandfontein Farm, just outside De Aar is home to many Khoisan paintings and engravings.

De Aar hosts two major shows a year. One is The Central Karoo show, where farmers from all over the Karoo, show their best of their stock. The other one is the Karoo fees, which is a cultural event with many bands and other autistics activities.

De Aar is suitable for every one. If you love the Peace and quietness of the Karoo, you will find it here and if you want to run a business for which you need "feet" you will also find it here. This is the "Growing Jewel" in the Karoo.
