Hartbeespoort Rural at a glance

From the moment you enter the Hartbeespoort you will feel the timeless magic. Here, where the Hartbeespoort Dam glitters with vibrant prism colors at sunrise and mellows to subdued hues at sunset. And where the fish eagle's distinctive call sounds in the distance.

Where the golden hour heralds a myriad of birds, some flying in V- formation, their screeching sounds claiming: "It's time to go to roost". Soon, the moon will rise and reflect her timeless brilliance on this vast expanse of water. The North West produces about 20% of South Africa's maize and about 15% of its wheat. Brits is an agricultural town situated near the popular Hartbeespoort Dam area. Farming in this region is optimal and the dam itself is the water supply for most of the extensive farmlands. Brits produces a variety of citrus fruit, grain and vegetables and the area is also known for platinum mining.

The Magaliesberg mountain range in the northeast extends about 130 km (about 80 miles) from Pretoria to Rustenburg which surround more than half of the Hartbeespoort rural area.

Temperatures around Hartbeespoort dam area range from 19° to 34 °C in the summer with an average of 24 °C and from 3° to 21 °C in the winter and an average humidity of 52%. Annual rainfall totals about 360 mm, with almost all of it falling during the summer months, between October and April.

Hartbeespoort Dam (also known as Harties) is an arch type dam. It lies in a valley to the south of the Magaliesberg mountain range and north of the Witwatersberg mountain range, It supplies irrigation water through a 544 kilometers (338 mi) long network of canals to 159.76 square kilometers (61.68 sq mi) of farmland on which various crops like: tobacco, wheat, lucerne, fruit and flowers are produced.

Broederstroom area - a small rural community on the Crocodile River, is situated on the Daspoortrand in the foothills of the Magaliesberg mountains just South of Hartbeespoort Dam. It is virtually on the doorstep of the Magaliesberg Nature Reserve. Broederstroom has a rich diversity of fauna and flora that forms part of the incredible scenic beauty of the region. It lies in an area geared for tourism and nature-based adventure yet it offers, at the same time, a restorative loveliness that never fails to fortify those who visit here. Majority of visitors use this town as a base for exploring as it offers many accommodation options for tourists who would like to explore the surroundings. There are many bed and breakfasts, guest houses, self-catering units and camping facilities available in the area.
