The suburb of Birdhaven is located on parts of the old Witwatersrand farms known as Syferfontein and Zandfontein. Its name has two possible origins:  either the neighbouring bird sanctuary or Jack Bird Barregar and the company Bird Investments; however, it wasn't until October 8, 1949, that it was proclaimed as a suburb.
