A brief history of the area
In 1850, Voortrekker leader, Andries Potgieter, and his people, were stricken by malaria at the settlement in Ohrigstad. Moving south, they found more pleasant surroundings and founded the town of Lydenburg. The name translates to "place or town of suffering" in memory of their loss. Before the Voortrekkers, the area was inhabited by Iron Age people and saw the arrival of the Pedi people. Their legacy lives on in the many Sotho speakers in the area.

Lydenburg's official name, "Mashishing", means "long, green grass". With its warm and temperate climate, you can see the inspiration behind the name. The temperature here averages 16.3 °C.
