About 65km north of Cape Town, you'll find the historic town of Malmesbury, located in close proximity to wine farms and surrounded by wheat fields, mountains and summer flowers. Located in a scenic part of the world known as the Swartland Wine Route, Malmesbury offers wine tasting, good food and opportunities for some superb hiking. Since its inception, Malmesbury has been a community characterised by farming, and over and above its wine, the region has developed a reputation for its grains as well as chicken and sheep farming.
A brief history of the area
Malmesbury's original settlers were attracted to the area as the result of a sulphur chloride mineral spring, which quickly became famous for its healing powers. Malmesbury got its name in 1829, in honour of the Earl of Malmesbury.Climate
As a result of its close proximity to Cape Town, Malmesbury enjoys similar weather to the Mother City, with the wettest months of the year being June, July and August. Average temperatures in the winter months range from minimums of 6°C to highs of approximately 20°C. In summer, the mercury can rise as high as 31°C on a typical day, falling to about 14°C at night.Schools in the area
