A brief history of the area
This part of KwaZulu-Natal, like much of the province, developed because of industry. In this case, it was the sugar industry and as history reads the town grew exponentially around the year 1895 when a man by the name of Marshall Campbell obtained the Mount Edgecombe Sugar Cane Mill. The greater region also has great significance to the Indian community of KZN as many traveled to this region to work on the sugar cane fields as indentured labour. The location has changed drastically since this era and has expanded somewhat.

"In Mount Edgecombe, indentured migrants occupied tent-like homes near the temple and workers were housed on the sugar mill. Some of the structures had existed for more than a hundred years before the newer structure near Campbell's Town and the surrounding areas came about". -https://www.sahistory.org.za/article/indian-community
