A brief history of the area
Over the years, Newcastle was known as Viljoen's Dorp and Waterfall River Township. However, Newcastle (named after a British aristocrat) stuck. The area has a rich history from the settlement of the British, occupation by the Boer forces during the Second Anglo-Boer War to the discovery of coal which brought prosperity to the town.
The town's associated with many famous faces. These include spiritual and political leader, Mahatma Gandhi, boxing legend, Theo Mthembu, writer, Rider Haggard, Springbok rugby player, Bakkies Botha, and 2003 MasterChef SA finalist, Shannon Smuts.
