A brief history of the area

The small village of Nottingham Road in which Gowrie Village lies was originally a military fort set up to protect local farmers from the indigenous San people who used to raid the area for cattle. Livestock theft by local San people led to the 1869 Reprisal launched from Fort Nottingham. The campaign, which established the boundaries in the settlers' favour, was commemorated in some of the final San rock art.
