A brief history of the area

Athlone forms part of Pietermaritzburg which is the capital of KwaZulu-Natal and is steeped in history that offers great insight into the beginning of this marvellous town. 

In 1838, the Boers from the Cape Colony established the town, naming it in honour of their deceased leaders Piet Retief and Gerrit Maritz, following their triumph over the Zulus at Blood River. However, in 1843, the British assumed control of the area and erected Fort Napier, which stands today as a significant historical monument.
