Interesting facts about the history of Hurlingham, Sandton
Hurlingham's story started in May of 1938 when it was first proclaimed as a suburb. Then, it was on a portion of land that was an old farm named Zandfontein, on the Witwatersrand. Hurlingham was named after a renowned English polo field with a thousand-year-old history.
Hurlingham in England can be traced back to 1066! Now a polo field, and club in southwest London, in 1066, it was part of an estate belonging to the Bishops of London. It was open land for centuries, and in the 1600s, buildings were put up on the grounds (hospitals for those who needed to be isolated due to the Black Plague). Homes were built in the 1800s, and in 1869, the Hurlingham Club was official. The first polo match was played there in 1874.
Indeed, it's a fitting ending to the story that Hurlingham in Johannesburg is but 6 kilometers from the Inanda Polo Club in Sandton.
