A brief history of the area
Tzaneen is Limpopo province's second largest town, and it was established in 1919. It's name is derived from the Northern Sotho word "Tsaneng", which means gathering place. One of the factors which give Tzaneen historical significance early on was that it was a key point on the route between Pietersburg (now Polokwane) and Phalaborwa.
Climate
If you enjoy a warm, subtropical climate, Tzaneen is the place to be. The rainy season takes place between October and February, during which time the mercury will rise to 31°C or 32°C on an average day. The coldest, driest months of the year are June and July, when there will typically be no rain and maximum temperatures of approximately 25°C.
