If you've ever had a picture in your mind of a subtropical garden town where just about anything - from avos, mangos and litchis to cotton, coffee and tea - will grow in abundance, you've probably been picturing Tzaneen. It is a lush, fertile reason characterised by high rainfall and agricultural activity. Close proximity to various game reserves and mountains makes Tzaneen a popular tourist destination, while its favourable climate, friendly people and pretty surroundings make it a great place to live. Tzaneen has the honour of being known as Limpopo's cleanest town.
A brief history of the area
Tzaneen is Limpopo province's second largest town, and it was established in 1919. It's name is derived from the Northern Sotho word "Tsaneng", which means gathering place. One of the factors which give Tzaneen historical significance early on was that it was a key point on the route between Pietersburg (now Polokwane) and Phalaborwa.
Climate
If you enjoy a warm, subtropical climate, Tzaneen is the place to be. The rainy season takes place between October and February, during which time the mercury will rise to 31°C or 32°C on an average day. The coldest, driest months of the year are June and July, when there will typically be no rain and maximum temperatures of approximately 25°C.

Monya's Restaurant is another excellent choice, with a menu boasting a wide range of options from meat and burgers to pastas and salads, as well as a mouthwatering array of appetisers. Another spot that's not to be missed in Tzaneen is the Le'Thaba Restaurant and Patio Bar at the Fairview Hotel. A variety of mouthwatering breakfasts, lunches and dinners are on offer here, expertly prepared using fresh local ingredients.
