Victoria West at a glance
Nestled between the Pramberge and a river, on the N12 route from Johannesburg to Cape Town, via Kimberley is Victoria-West, a small Karoo town with an unofficial population of 11000 people. Victoria West was founded in 1843 when the Dutch Reformed Church bought a part of the farm, Zeekoegat. The town was then named after Queen Victoria of England.
The town is relatively small but is well known for a lot of things and places. Some of the places are like, The Apollo Theatre, the last Deco Art Cinema in Africa, The Mannetjies Roux’s private collection of Rugby Memorabilia, A museum, one of only three regional museums in Northern Cape and a unique collection of Victorian Houses etc. Most off all Victoria West are well known for his people’s hospitality and friendliness.
During the year here are plenty of events, like the Agri Expo Show, the Karoo Golf Classic, the Film Festival, Veteran Motor Show, and a lot of Merino Auctions when people from all over the country come to this wonderful Karoo town.
Victoria Wes is also well known as the “Merino Mecca” of South Africa and the best quality wool are produced here. You will also find some of the countries best breeders for Merino Rams here.
