Beaufort West is 465km from Cape Town, 180km from Oudtshoorn and 250km from George. It lies in the heart of the Karoo and is the gateway to the Western Cape, and a popular stop over on the N1 Johannesburg-Cape Town route.
The town offers excellent infrastructure to meet the needs of tourists traveling through and those who wish to live in the beautiful Karoo town with its many hidden surprises. It is nestled between the Nuweveld Mountains and sits in the centre of Africa's largest plateau, considered a wonder of the scientific world and is considered South Africa's riches 'Stone Age' towns.

The town with the first municipality in SA, now well on its way to its 200th anniversary, was founded by Lord Charles Somerset in 1818. Here, you will find old historic buildings, churches, beautiful architecture and a few remaining ancient pear trees.

Many famous names are depicted in street names and buildings and you will find a few fine examples of Sir Herbert Baker architecture in Governor Stroeble's Street. In famous heart surgeon, Chris Barnard's father's church (museum), couples still get married today. The heart museum is visited by thousands every year.

The Karoo National Park with its mountain pride and beautiful setting lies just outside the town. Viewpoints, motor drives, walking trails and many animal species make this a real Karoo experience. An award winning Caravan Park and beautiful thatched chalets host people from all over the world. Beaufort West is a beautiful town to live in, with excellent weather, a dry climate and summer rainfall. The area boasts fertile soil and well-fed with underground water, resulting in beautiful gardens, especially roses and trees.

The excellent infrastructure includes multi-lingual schools, a provincial hospital, doctors, pharmacies, chain stores and exclusive coffee shops. Attractions include "Oom Tim Ellis se fietswinkel", antique shops and beautiful guest houses.

Beaufort West has a very active community with sports clubs including golf, tennis, rugby, netball, gym and hunting. There are a number of hunting lodges in the area. The area is also renowned for the best lamb and mutton, believed to be a result of the animals feeding on the 'Karoobossie'. The global shortage in energy sources has led to scientific experiments focusing on the Great Karoo and the Beaufort West district specifically for the mining of uranium and uranium by-products which has in turn spurred tremendous development, making the area an excellent property investment. The town offers a broad mix of property, from farms to residential and commercial and residential with an interesting mix of Cape Dutch, Edwardian, Victorian, New Gothic and Eclectic architecture.There are many Karoo houses that have been renovated and a lot still awaiting new owners to give it a worthy makeover.
