Daniëlskuil is located in the Green Kalahari region of the Northern Cape of South Africa. Fantastic fertile soil and an abundance of water saw to it that man dwelled in the area since prehistoric times, and later with the Griqua people present in the area.
The town takes its name from a cone-shaped depression 6 metres (20 ft) deep in the dolomitic limestone with a domed covering, reminiscent of the biblical "Daniël in the lion's den" (Afrikaans meaning "pit"). There are various stories around the pit including that the Griqua leader, Adam Kok might have used it as a prison at some stage.
Daniëlskuil is also believed to be the first documented case of cigarette smoking in South Africa. In June 1823, the Korana and San leaders were rather shocked when traveller, George Thomas had the audacity to pass over their traditional peace pipe in favour of tobacco wrapped in paper. The rather large-scale mining of lime at Daniëlskuil has led to its growth and development. Since 1974 Idwala Limes has been mining the lime deposits dating back 200 million years. Over 5 million tons of stone is mined annually.
