Franschhoek is another jewel in the Western Cape crown and a popular wine region that attracts scores of visitors from all over the country and globe on a year-round basis. It is just 45-minutes from Cape Town and close to Stellenbosch and Paarl.
Franschhoek (the French Corner) is named after the French settlers who arrived in the 17th and 18th centuries and brought with them the vines all the way from Europe. The village has retained its French legacy and the annual Bastille Day celebration attracts people from all over the world. Surrounded by exquisite mountain landscapes, the Franschhoek Valley is picturesque and one of the most sought-after places to live or own property in.
It is renowned for its cosmopolitan lifestyle with the main road lined with shops, boutiques, art and craft stores and many street cafes, diners and five star restaurants. There are some 28 restaurants to choose from which include some of the top ranked in the country, and a number of top chefs have been associated with the village including Margot Janse (formerly of Le Quartier Française) and Reuben Riffel (Reuben's).
As a popular wine region, there are about 30 wine cellars including many historic farms and well-known brands such as La Motte, Backsberg, Babylonstoren, Bellingham, Boschendal, Haute Cabrière and more. There are also many other attractions in the town including the Huguenot Memorial Museum and the Motor Museum.
Franschhoek offers excellent amenities including a private school, Bridge House, but is close to Paarl and Stellenbosch (and Cape Town) for all other needs.
