Brief History of the Area:

The history of Riversdale begins in 1838 when the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) established a new Parish in Swellendam on a farm set on the banks of the Vet River.
The farm was known as 'Doornkraal' and was subsequently renamed 'Riversdale' after Harry Rivers, the obligatory civil commissioner and resident magistrate of Swellendam from 1834 to 1841; it was during this time, on the 30 of August 1838 that Riversdale was officially proclaimed a town. The congregation was also founded in 1839 and Reverend J C le Fabre Moorrees was selected to be Riversdale's first minister. In 1848, Sir Harry Smith officially proclaimed the magistracy of Riversdale and Major Barnes was appointed as the first official magistrate. On the 6th of June 1849, Riversdale was declared as a municipality and three
commissioners were appointed. Today, Riverdale is the seat of the Hessequa Local Municipality and is also considered to be the westernmost point in the Garden Route region.
