5 fun things you can do in Secunda

Secunda comes from the Latin word 'secund' which means second. Don't let the name fool you, though. This coal-mining town may seem sleepy. But, it's second to none if you're looking for a fun experience. Farirai Sanyika was pleasantly surprised after moving to the area:

"When the day finally arrived ... I felt afraid, nervous, DOOMED. I had always been a city girl and couldn't imagine living in a small town like Secunda. Guess what? I survived and continue to survive!"

What she quickly learnt was that Secunda offers many great recreational activities. Here's a list of some of the highlights.

1. Gamble or play golf - it's your choice

If you live for a thrill, you'll find an exceptional gambling experience at the Graceland Casino and Golf Course. With 294 slots and 19 tables, there's every space to become a winner. The slots are open 24 hours a day while the tables boast a variety of games. You can play American Roulette, Arizona Poker, Texas Hold 'Em Poker and Blackjack.

For a laid-back time, you can move over to the golf course. Graceland has an 18-hole championship golf course which was designed by Gary Player. It promises to keep you challenged with elevation changes, water hazards, rolling fairways, and other obstacles. Need a new club? The Graceland Pro Shop has all you need to make that hole-in-one.

2. Work on your dance moves

You can find the magic in movement at Step2dream DANCE Academy. Secunda's local dance school was founded by veteran dance instructor, Stephan Jonker. Here you'll learn many different styles such as ballroom, Latin, ballet and hip hop.

If you're interested in dancing competitively, this is the place to do it. Step2dream DANCE Academy students excelled at the 2017 South African Dance Championship held in Polokwane. The school has also hosted famous dancers such as Strictly Come Dancing's Quintus Jansen and Salome Sechele.

3. Ride a water slide

On a hot day, the AquaZone Waterpark at Lake Umuzi Waterfront is the place to be. This family-friendly venue has 5 slides including the Fast River Tube Slide, Blue Mamba Slide and a baby slide. It's the perfect way to entertain the kids and escape your electronics.

Sadly, the Waterpark will be closed for winter until 21 September 2019. There's still plenty to do at Lake Umuzi. You can check out the sports facility, children's play area, restaurants and minigolf course.

4. Take in a show

Secunda Mall has a Ster-Kinekor Theatre which screens the latest blockbusters. But, if you're interested in something less commercial, you can see what's on at the Johannes Stegmann Theatre. Located on Louwrens Muller street, this venue has dazzled locals with its variety of performances. It has seen comedy from the likes of Abuti Lolo and Jason Goliath, poetry from Mutabaruka and dancing from the Russian State Dance company and the Ingoma musical tours.

5. Go for a picnic

You can unwind and relax at Eende Dam. This retreat provides an excellent place to set up your picnic or braai. You can fish at the dam and feed the ducks. There's also a miniature steam train which takes children on rides. With lots of security guards on duty, you'll find your time at Eende Dam very peaceful.
