A taste of Greece for those living in and around Bedford Gardens

Many families who have made their home in Bedford Gardens can regale you with stories of special moments, milestone celebrations and family memories made at Mythos Restaurant. In the Seeff team's opinion, proximity to this lovely restaurant is one of the many things that makes Bedford Gardens a great place to call home.

A brief history of Mythos

Mythos opened its doors in 2006 and now has several branches around South Africa. The entire team, including chefs, hosts and managers have worked hard from day one, and their work has paid off with the restaurant being named Best Greek Restaurant in Joburg, Pretoria and Ekurhuleni for six years in a row from 2013 to 2019. The restaurant quickly became an icon of Bedford Centre and after closing down for a short time, locals celebrated the reopening of Mythos Bedfordview in September 2019.

Highlights of the menu

No introduction to a Greek restaurant can go without a description of the cuisine on offer. In true Greek tradition, Mythos offers meze platters which are full of mouthwatering Greek tapas that make a meal for the whole family. Traditional yiros are also on the menu, filling the freshest pitas with a delicious blend of meat, tomato, red onion and tzatziki. The list of not-to-be-missed Greek dishes also includes moussaka, kleftiko and pastitsio.

Moussaka is mouthwatering layers of brinjal, potatoes, beef mince and béchamel sauce, and there's a vegetarian version that replaces the mince with butternut. Kleftiko is a tender lamb shank slow-roasted on the bone and served with oven-roasted potatoes. Pastitsio is a delectable Greek dish similar to lasagna. It consists of layers of beef mince, macaroni and cheese topped with a béchamel sauce and oven baked.

If you're in the mood for seafood, there's delectable east coast sole and kingklip on the menu as well as "fish and chips", prawns and calamari. Sardines - a European favourite - are also available, grilled with green peppers and onions.

Don't forget dessert

Residents of Bedford Gardens who have visited Mythos provide a piece of important advice: save space for dessert. If you're not familiar with Greek cuisine, you may be tempted to stick with what you know and have the cheesecake and ice cream or chocolate sauce. Our advice is to bypass these delicious familiar desserts and try one of the traditional Greek desserts like Loukoumades, which are Greek doughnuts drizzled with honey and topped with pecan nuts and cinnamon. Other options include Portokalopita (traditional Green orange cake with vanilla ice cream) and frozen Greek yoghurt which is served with baklava or Turkish delight topping. If it's a hot day and you're in the mood for a cold dessert, don't miss the Mythos gelato bar.

What makes Mythos special?

For starters, the menu is based on the head chef's family recipes, bringing an authentic taste of Greece to the table. Over and above this, all key ingredients are imported directly from Greece. In the words of one Mythos reviewer on Google, "Being Greek, I'm quite selective when it comes to eating Greek food. However, Mythos never disappoints."

One of the things that the Seeff team loves most about Bedford Gardens (and Bedfordview as a whole) is the warmth of the community spirit. Mythos gives you an opportunity close to home to experience the warmth of Greek culture and cuisine. Bon appetit - or, as the Greek would say - Kali Oreksi! If you'd like to know more about what Bedford Gardens has to offer, contact Seeff today.
