Cape Town’s first desalination plant

Cape Town's first desalination plant has come online in Strandfontein. The plant is currently pumping three million litres of desalinated sea water into the city's water supply and will eventually produce a whopping seven million litres on a daily basis.

The plant is fully functional and has passed all of the necessary laboratory testing and produces water that is up to par with the City, tasting no different from bottled or tap water.

There is also a desalination plant at the V&A Waterfront that is currently producing water that will eventually contribute to Cape Town’s water supply but is not yet at the standard required. A third desalination plant at Monwabisi will contribute seven million litres of its own once it passes all the necessary tests.

Deputy Mayor Ian Neilson has said that this massive amount of water is still not enough to completely bring the city out of crisis and that we are still counting on a decent amount of winter rain to ensure that our dams reach optimum levels.

Further efforts to augment Cape Town’s water supply is being focused on tapping into groundwater.

The desalinated water costs around R40 a kilolitre which is R35 more than dam water and the plants have only been commissioned for a period of two years.

Capetonians still need to continue to conserve water as current water usage is down to 554 million litres per day which is still above the target of 450 million litres per day.
