City of Cape Town to spend R2bn on housing projects

The City of Cape Town has proposed to spend at least R2 billion on housing projects within the next 3 years.

Cape Town has a dire need for affordable housing and to address this issue, Mayoral Committee Member Brett Herron says that of the R2 billion, R585 million is immediately being budgeted for this current financial year.

The municipality’s draft budget for 2018/2019 has been tabled at council and includes a list of 36 housing projects planned for communities including Nyanga, Gugulethu, Belhar, Manenberg, Langa, Masiphumelele, Strand and Salt River.

Herron said that the bulk of the housing projects would be developed on well-located land close to public transport services and job opportunities.
