There is no question that South Africa is home to some of the world's most natural beauty. We have everything from our endless horizons to landscapes that are as lush as story books. The Thabaphaswa Mountain Sanctuary is one of these fantastic landmarks. Situated in Mokopane, this retreat has become an attraction far and wide.
Experience the wonders of the outdoors
Nestled in the province of Limpopo is this bush oasis that offers an array of activities for the family to enjoy. Apart from the legendary hiking trails, there are also 4x4 routes, mountain biking trails, rock climbing, swimming, cable sliding, and more. The focus of Thabaphaswa is on eco-tourism and making people aware of the many qualities an outdoor holiday adventure can add to your life.
Spending time in nature is a balm for the mind and a cure for many of life's dilemmas. There's no better place to do some self-reflection and soul searching than while on a hike through the lush greenery of the Thabaphaswa mountains.
Highlights of the hiking trails
When you want to truly switch off from nature, this is the place to be. With limited mobile reception, you will have to trek around to find a decent signal. You can escape from your work emails or the constant Facebook updates in utter tranquility.
Thabaphaswa offers hikers the opportunity to explore many different trails on the range. Each has its own unique appeal and is set at a varied difficulty level.
The Black Eagle/Tshesane Loop
This trail gives runners the chance to circumvent the valley and is often an overnight experience with camping at Dome Rock Camp. It has a steep climb in the beginning and is a total distance of 15 km. The trail is named Black Eagle as it is close to nests of these majestic birds and you may often spot one or two on your treks.
The Tshesane Hiking Trail is navigated through the hills of the northeastern side of the valley. It joins the Mokholokwane Trail's mountain stream for a refreshing end.
The Lookout Point
Mountain bikers and 4x4 enthusiasts more popularly enjoy this trail. Hikers usually take a day to complete Lookout Point with a stunning view across Thabaphaswa's north face of the mountain. There are two streams along the trail with the Witvinger Nature Reserve being the catchment area.
Thabaphaswa Summit Trail
This 1 km hike starts at Mountain Fig Camp. At the summit, it's 1, 763m high with a 360 degree-view of the area.
Mhahlare Hiking Trail
Less strenuous than the Black Eagle trail, this is a beginner's dream for those who want to ease into the hiking lifestyle. This trail meanders through the Dome Rock Camp and Kanniedood Mountain Hut.
Klipspringer Hiking Trail
Starting at Dome Rock Camp, following the foothills of the Mhahlare Mountain and linking with the Tshesane trail near the farm is this scenic trail that promises a variety of hiking difficulties.
The Bobbejaan Hiking Trail
If you're looking for a trail that incorporates a shortcut through the Mhahlare trail to the Farm Homestead then this is the perfect one for you. It can be used for hiking until it reaches a 4x4 road. Have some fun in the mud with the slips and slides this trail provides.
Hiking Thabaphaswa's mountain trails is an experience no outdoor lover should miss. The Mokopane Biodiversity Conservation Centre is located nearby so you can relax and take in a game drive featuring The Big Five after a strenuous day.
