School’s out, the holiday are here and it is that time of year when we all wind down and look forward to the annual summer holidays. This is also a time to be extra vigilant. Be sure to pay extra attention to your most valuable asset, your home, by ensuring that the security system is in tip top shape.
If you are going away for the holidays, be sure to advise your security company, check that your insurances are up to date and adequate and inform neighbours and the local Neighbourhood Watch too. Pack away any valuables or lock it up in a safe or a bank safety deposit box if necessary.
Whether home or away, this might also be the ideal time to beef up your security by calling in a consultant to do a good check-up of your system. There may be more up-to-date measures that you can put in place such as CCTV and a linked response. Adequate exterior lighting and sensors are also advised especially for dark corners.
If you are going away, do not leave too many clues that you are going away. Be sure to cancel any deliveries and if you are able to find a house sitter, all the better.
If you are home for the holidays, the same vigilance would apply. If you are indulging in a few luxury purchases over the season, be sure to discard any packing thoroughly, do not let that new big screen TV box draw unnecessary attention to your home.
Apply the same vigilance when leaving your home. Be sure to keep valuables out of sight when you go shopping, eat out or enjoy a night at the theatre and stay alert to any suspicious followers. Ensure that you have emergency numbers on hand in your phone as well as in your home, displayed where you can see it in the event of urgency.
