Along with basking in the glorious sun on Camps Bay Beach, visiting the theatre and seeing and being seen at the array of restaurants and nightclubs, going hiking is one of the quintessential Camps Bay pastimes. This is thanks to the proximity of the Pipe Track, which is well known as one of Table Mountain National Park's favourite (and easiest) hiking trails. As a realtor who loves everything about Cape Town and Camps Bay, Seeff explores the Pipe Track in the hope of encouraging you to do the same thing.
Introducing the Pipe Track route
The Pipe Track route starts where Tafelberg Road meets Kloof Nek and runs to the Camps Bay Pipe Track entrance. It gets its name from its original purpose, which was to allow maintenance of a pipeline running below the Twelve Apostles. The pipeline, which dates back to the 19th century, was constructed to carry water from Disa Gorge to the Molteno Reservoir in Oranjezicht.
To get to the start of the Pipe Track hiking trail, you'll need to find the concrete stairs close to the first parking lot on Tafelberg Road. Alternatively, you can start your hike from Camps Bay, but be advised that the initial climb will be tougher than the rest of your hike.
This Table Mountain trail is described as perfect for beginner hikers, as well as for anyone looking for a laidback way to get in some serious steps. Rather than climbing to the top of the mountain, the Pipe Track circles around the mountain.
Photos you'll want to take along the way
At the beginning of the trail, you'll find the blockhouse aqueduct, which is definitely cute enough to warrant a spot on your Instagram feed. In the distance, you'll enjoy breathtaking views looking down over Camps Bay and Clifton, as well as the Atlantic Ocean. There is spectacular shrubbery and beautiful wild proteas to be photographed, so keep your camera or smartphone somewhere where you can easily get to it. You'll also get to make the most of magnificent views of Lion's Head, the Twelve Apostles mountain range and, of course, the beautiful Mother City. A final photographic feature to note is Table Mountain's unique fynbos.
Remember the golden rules of mountain hiking safety
When you go hiking, whether in Table Mountain National Park or anywhere else, there are some golden safety rules that you need to remember. For starters, never go alone. SANParks recommends groups of no less than four. Make sure you have enough time to get back before dark and always wear appropriate shoes and hats, ensuring that you have rainproof gear with you - even in the height of summer. Never attract unwanted attention by openly displaying valuables and be sure to program emergency numbers into your phone before starting your hike.
