Welcome to our April newsletter! It has been an incredibly busy few months at the Seeff Secunda office. Between high-profile awards evenings and physical endurance tests for charity, our team has been moving at a rapid pace.
While we celebrate our local successes, we also keep a watchful eye on the global stage, as events far beyond our borders continue to ripple through the Secunda economy.
Global Watch: Geopolitical Tensions & The Energy Ripple
The start of 2026 has been marked by significant geopolitical instability, specifically the escalating conflict between the USA and Iran. As of mid-April, the collapse of ceasefire talks has led to a naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for the world's energy supply.
The Impact on Oil and Sasol
This conflict has sent shockwaves through the energy markets, with Brent Crude oil prices surging past $103 per barrel this week. While high oil prices globally often place a strain on the consumer at the pump, they have a complex impact on our local economy in Secunda:
Sasol’s Position: As our town’s primary employer and a global leader in synthetic fuels, Sasol often sees a boost in revenue when global oil prices rise, as their coal-to-liquid production becomes increasingly competitive.
The Broader Economy: Unfortunately, these gains are often offset by the rising cost of living. Increased fuel prices drive up transport costs for food and retail, putting pressure on every household's monthly budget.
Interest Rates and Market Sentiment
Despite these global pressures, the South African Reserve Bank kept interest rates unchanged in its most recent meeting. However, with the "war premium" on oil driving inflation fears, many banks are now forecasting a rate hike in the coming months.
Our Chairman, Samuel Seeff, has been vocal in his stance that rates should remain steady. He argues that the South African economy is still fragile and that a rate hike based on "temporary" global oil volatility would be a mistake. He believes that keeping rates lower is essential to stimulate the property market and support first-time buyers who are already feeling the pinch of higher electricity and fuel costs.
Celebrating Excellence: Our Annual Prize Giving
In a much-needed break from the daily grind, we recently hosted our annual Seeff Secunda Prize Giving. It was an intimate, "black-tie" evening dedicated to the agents who have gone above and beyond. We were treated to a night of fine dining, and a powerful motivational message by Chantel van der Merwe, which left us all inspired for the year ahead.
A massive congratulations to our top local performers:
Sales Agent of the Year: Fiona Viljoen
Rental Agent of the Year: Christie Cordier
Dominating the Region: Seeff Northern Region Awards
The winning streak didn't stop there. Our team headed to Pretoria for the Seeff Northern Region Annual Awards, where Secunda truly made its mark against the best in the province.
Our rental department was the star of the show. Christie Cordier and Alecia Jansen van Rensburg took home the top honors in the Commercial Rental category. Furthermore, we are incredibly proud to announce that in the Residential category, every single one of our agents is currently ranked within the top 10 in the region for their performance.
This level of consistency is rare, and it is a testament to the hard work and professionalism of the entire Secunda team.
The Epic for Orphans: A Lesson in Resilience
The Seeff Epic for Orphans project reached its climax during the Absa Cape Epic in March. Our team, Seeff Secunda Epic for Orphans, set out with the goal of raising vital funds for local children’s homes.
As many of you know, the Cape Epic is "The Untamed African MTB Race" for a reason. Our riders gave their absolute best, but the journey was fraught with challenges:
* Maree was forced to withdraw due to a serious back injury.
* Renier suffered a terrible fall on the very last day of the race. He was evacuated and has since undergone surgery. We are happy to report he is now recovering at home, and we wish him a speedy return to the saddle.
While they didn't cross the finish line they envisioned, they taught us a valuable lesson: Success is not just about the finish line. It is about the daily commitment, the adjustments made when things go wrong, and the courage to keep moving forward.
The mission continues! We are still actively raising funds for the orphans. Mark your calendars for our next big event:
12-Hour Relay Event
Date: 10 October 2026
Join us as we continue to ride for a cause that is bigger than ourselves.
Final Market Word
The Secunda property market remains remarkably active. Despite the uncertainty surrounding interest rates and global conflict, people are still buying, selling, and renting at a healthy pace. Our town remains a resilient hub, and we are here to help you navigate these shifting tides.
Until next month,
The Seeff Secunda Team
