The History of the Whale Crier of Hermanus

Have you had the pleasure of witnessing Hermanus's beloved whale crier happily strolling through our charming streets, serenading the town with his melodious kelp horn? With every resounding note, he joyfully signals the presence of whales from June to November, guiding the townsfolk to their awe-inspiring spectacle. Follow the enchanting sound of his horn to find out where the whales are at play in our beautiful bay.

How did this remarkable tradition come to be?

In 1991, a moment of inspiration struck Jim Wepener when he overheard a tourist exclaim that viewing these majestic whales in the town was the Cape's best-kept secret. Being a part of the tourism industry, Wepener embarked on a quest to share this secret with the world and put Hermanus on the map. Initially, he enlisted the help of friends and family to call in whale sightings to the local radio station. However, an even more whimsical idea soon took shape.

Enter Pieter Claasen, a true local who fearlessly embraced the role of the first whale crier. Adorned with a kelp horn in hand, Claasen gallantly wandered the streets of Hermanus. In the beginning, he faced ridicule and scepticism, but buoyed by Wepener's unwavering support, Claasen pressed on.

His determination eventually propelled him to international recognition at the prestigious Topsham's Annual Town Criers Competition. Following in his footsteps, Wilson Salakuzana from Zwelihle, a man with a heart as big as the ocean, represented Hermanus in Manchester, UK, as the Only Whale Crier in the world. A testament to his character, Wilson co-founded the esteemed Nomzamo Educare Centre in Zwelihle. His inspiring journey concluded with his retirement in 2011.

Today, the legacy lives on, embodied by the passionate Lutho Mlonyeni, the current custodian of the revered title, "Whale Crier of Hermanus." Adorned with these words on the customary large sandwich board, Lutho roams the streets with infectious enthusiasm, beckoning all to behold the extraordinary creatures that grace the shores of our enchanting town.
