The World University Rankings have been published and The University of Cape Town has placed both first in the country and in Africa as a whole.
UCT leapt to 223rd place worldwide among 18000 institutions. The University of Cape Town beat out the University of Witwatersrand which was ranked the number one university in Africa for the last four years.
The seven South African universities on this year's ranking also include University of Pretoria, Stellenbosch University, University of Johannesburg, North West University and the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
The seven indicators used to rank the world's universities assesses the quality of education, alumni employment, quality of faculty, publications in top-tier journals, publications in highly influential journals and publications that are highly cited, as well as total number of publications overall.
The quality of education and faculty indicators are based on awards, prizes and medals and the alumni employment indicator measures the number of students that go on to hold CEO positions in leading global companies.
The top university in the world is still Harvard University which has held the position for seven consecutive years.
