Western Cape needs blood donations

The Western Cape is in dire need of blood donations, particularly from O positive and O negative blood donors. There is also a high demand for B positive and A positive blood as stocks are running low.

Capetonians are being urged to visit a nearby blood donation centre and give some blood during the course of this week. The Western Cape blood bank only has enough blood to supply the demand for one more day.

The Western Cape needs 700 blood donations per day

Western Cape Blood Transfusion Services spokesperson Michelle Vermeulen says that they try to maintain enough stock to supply the province for five days. However, they only have enough to stock for one day.

To maintain their required stock, the blood bank needs 700 donations per day. “We are appealing to the public to donate blood in order for us to have a stable amount of five days’ worth of blood,” says Vermeulen.
