Canals, St Francis Bay

The Canals, then called the Marina Glades, was a major project started by Leighton Hulett, after he exchanged a house and a plot for 179 morgen land with 2.3km river frontage. A dredger was bought and the work on the first canal started in 1960. The Cove, which leads directly to the river mouth, was the starting point of the canals. Houses were all painted white and had to have thatch roofs. Later years, tile roofs were allowed and lately chromadek roofs have been approved. After a couple of fires which caused a lot of damage, houses were upgraded and the Canal area has become an upmarket area seen as a great place to invest either buying a holiday home or to live permanently.
