Gansbaai was founded around 1881, when a young fisherman, Johannes Cornelis Wessels, discovered the rich fishing grounds and settled there. Soon other families followed, forming a small fishing village.
The name “Gansbaai” (meaning “Bay of Geese”) comes from the flocks of Egyptian geese that gathered at a freshwater spring near a today’s harbour.
