OPEN KAROO VELD FARM
LOCATION: +- 80 km west of Aberdeen and 60 km south-west of Murraysburg in the Western Cape. SIZE: 4,135 ha RAINFALL: Summer rainfall of +-250 mm per annum CARRYING CAPACITY: 180 Large stock units at +- 22-24 ha per LSU TOPOGRAPHY: Open Karoo veld +- 960 m ASL in the central and eastern part of the property. In the south-west a low and flat Dolorite ridge of 1070 m that runs NW – SE tapering out at the southern boundary. North of the ridge the confluence of the Soutspruit and Buffels River with it’s wide valley floor running north-south through the property. VEGETATION: Typical dwarf Karoo shrubs and succulents on the plains and rante with bushman grass and acacia & ganna along the Buffels River with palatble perrenial grasses like cenchrus and panicum. WATER SUPPLY: There are 10 boreholes, 9 windmlls, 8 cement reservoirs and 20 troughs for livestock in all 10 camps. There are 4 other boreholes that could be used to irrigate +- 5 ha of lands. The farm has two weirs; the southern +-6 m high weir is a sediment trap and prevents soil erosion upstream while the other V-shaped weir on the northern boundary channels water out of the river into an extensive network of furrows and contour ditches that covers +- 900 ha which is periodically flooded.
BUILDINGS: The homestead has 5 bedroom, 2 bathrooms, a large kitchen, diningroom, lounge, office, and includes guest accommodation with seperate private entrance & entertainment area.
